Offering money for swaps?

Just curious, is it common/legal to offer cash to someone who's maybe wanting to swap but not sure about it? Seems like I should have heard stories about this happening so maybe there's a good reason I haven't

I know people have paid for academy spots before. But yeah not heard of that for a swap but it wouldn’t surprise me.

It’s crazy some people have have to resort to bribing fellow employees to get back home all because the placement system is so screwed up. Just go back to hiring by region, and/or give people an idea where they’re going before their last week at the Academy and it would solve a lot of the issues.
You say that but I would bet 90% of them aren’t going home but chasing the money and most sought after facilities.

Exactly this. Look at the ncept lists and how many people apply to Dfw and den. There is no way that’s all home for them. And for the people trying to get home I am sympathetic, but unfortunately there are an equal amount of people who don’t give a crap and will go anywhere. So the system will not change until a large majority complains or at a minimum supports your cause.

Meh, I’m sure there’s a few older controllers that are trying to get their high 3, but I bet the percentage of those trying to get closer to where they’re from makes up the majority of people trying to move.

There are plenty of people from small towns in the Midwest that ended in New York or California and visa versa that really just want to return to the pace of life they’re accustomed to. Plus be closer to family.

DEN err list is 300+ deep. Those small Midwest facility lists are probably 2-3 deep on a good pull. I don’t think many old controllers are moving to get their high three. If they haven’t by mid career they are probably home steaded already.

How sought after are IAH, PIE, MCO and LAS?

Only four places I would WANT to work since I have family there. Obviously I’d go anywhere, but those are my preferences

PIE is probably the least desired facility on that list, but with all of those you'd have to do some serious networking. For MCO you'd also have to sell a kid.

PIE is the it one you'd be able to get out of the academy.

What he said. LAS is relatively easy to get to though. I think people get burned out living in Vegas. If you aren’t associated with the strip you ain’t shit there and a few friends have told me it’s terrible place to raise kids (aside from the strip lol).

I could be wrong, but I don’t think MCO has ever been able to pickup since NCEPT started. IAH is very difficult though. Gotta know some people or politic your ass off.

I just finished living in Vegas for 6 years and worked on the strip the whole time, so I have great casino and entertainment connections, so I’d love to go back. All the free shows, concerts, and clubs would be enticing for me.

Ultimately IAH or anything near Houston would be the goal as that’s where my immediate family is. I just found out about DHW, wouldn’t mind that either tbh. Probably a lot easier to get into too

They should have all new hires list 3 preferred facilities, and any hard to staff places should just hire locally like N90 or ACK

This doesn't work - they used to let you choose a state to work in when you got hired, but people quickly realized that you had a much better chance of getting picked up if you listed a state with lots of facilities, so they'd do that to get their foot in the door then immediately start trying to transfer out. Unless you're willing to totally eliminate transfers including hardships, there are just always gonna be hard-to-staff facilities.

They have done that with one of the NY facilities but if I remember correctly there were legal issues somehow.

I don't think listing preferred facilities is realistic because you will still have a bunch trying to get to a few states. Regardless of how you do it there will always be places that people will not want to go to.

This is only half true, I think things worked way better when you had to pick two states. People who only wanted a place close to home could apply for that, not get stuck anywhere then complain, and people who really wanted to go anywhere could pick states with lots of facilities.

Plus if you picked a big state just to get your foot in the door most of those states have big centers and/or TRACONS and that was the era where you could be sent to a level 11 up/down or N90 off the street. So you had to prove yourself at a big place if it was going to work out for you, and most people who made it for used to the big money and stayed.
