Hiring Bid FAA-ATO-20-ALLSRCE-65607

Have zero expectations about where you might end up, and know you might be there for a long time. The majority of people don’t end up where they would prefer to be. That’s just one of the sucky parts of the job.

Your best bet is to not even think about it until placement day. Passing the Academy should be priority #1 with a mindset that you’ll go wherever they send you.

That works in theory. But when you have school age kids and a spouse that has to be able to get to work going wherever isn’t really feasible.

I made a spreadsheet of all the towers and ranked them on how well they’d work for my family. And if one of those is on the list that’ll be extra motivation to be the best to get a facility I want.

I'm currently doing the same with enroute centers. It's not to speculate, its just so that when I get the list I know where my priorities are. Likelihood of my spouse finding a job, schools for future children etc. That way I'm not picking blindly after all the hard work I'm going to put in.

It’s fine to fantasize about what might work best, I’m just saying you can’t have any expectations. Nobody knows what their list is going to be until the last week and you don’t know where everyone in your class will place until the last eval. If you happen to finish last in your class, you’ll won’t have no more than 2 or 3 choices. You have to be prepared to end up virtually anywhere. If that’s not feasible for your situation, then you may want to reconsider before going through everything only to find your only options aren’t going to work for you.
