Air Traffic Control Trainee.

Learn more about this agency
Responsibilities
  • This is a developmental Air Traffic Control Specialist (ATCS) position responsible for the safe, orderly, and expeditious movement of air traffic through the nation's airspace. Developmental controllers receive a wide range of training in controlling and separating live air traffic within designated airspace at and around an airport traffic control tower or radar approach control facility, or air route traffic control center.
  • As a new ATCS, you will spend your first several weeks of employment in an intensive training program at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City, OK. While attending academy training you will be on a temporary appointment. Academy students receive basic air traffic control training at the FAA Academy, which includes:
    • Complete occupational indoctrination including highlights of Federal employment, familiarization with organizational structure & functions, aircraft, air traffic control system, & aviation industry, classroom instruction & workshop exercises relating to the air traffic control system.
  • Individuals who do not successfully complete training at the FAA Academy and all other necessary requirements will have their employment terminated.
  • Prior failure of FAA Academy training or prior declination of permanent facility placement offer after completing Academy training may constitute a basis for non-selection and/or veterans' preference pass over.
  • Upon successful completion of the Academy initial training program & other employment requirements, newly hired controllers will be offered a permanent appointment at an FAA facility with a basic salary of $40,694 plus applicable locality pay based on facility assignment. Applicants with prior ATC experience will have their salary set in accordance with the ATCS Collective Bargaining Agreement, upon conversion.
  • Controller-trainees will be paid long-term expense rate (per diem) for Oklahoma City, OK to help offset daily cost of living while attending FAA Academy. FAA will pay for cost of travel in accordance with applicable agency policies.
  • As an ATCS you will receive pay increases as you successfully complete the progressive phases of controller training at your assigned facility. The FAA has Air Traffic Control Facilities in every state as well as Puerto Rico, The U. S. Virgin Islands, and Guam. This announcement is open to those applicants willing to work at any FAA Air Traffic Control Facility. Applicant geographic area preferences are for informational purposes only and will not be used in the selection process; however, preferences may be considered at time of placement. Facility placements will be finalized the day following successful completion of Academy training. Declining to select a facility from the list of available facilities will result in termination of employment, as placement will be based upon the needs of the FAA.
  • Prior experience or training in air traffic control is not required. If a candidate applies for and is selected under this temporary trainee announcement, all of the employment conditions associated with this FG-1 position will apply, regardless of whether the candidate possesses the specialized experience that would have otherwise qualified him/her under the September 2019 vacancy announcement FAA-ATO-19-ATCEXP-63736.

Welcome all to the waiting game of your future. If this is your first time aboard the slow train to OKC follow these guidelines and everything in the world will be okay.

1. There will be forum trolls with fake accounts
2. There will probably be the same questions asked over and over again, don't be surprised if anyone gets mad and says "check the FAQ"...but you probably should check the FAQ.... ?, but also don't be afraid to ask questions, there are a lot of people on this forum that have a lot of knowledge with the process. To answer one of the most common questions that I saw in the last bid: ATCprep.com is a great piece of study material for the first half of the test. LSAT logical reasoning practice questions can help you with the second half.
3. No one is actually 100% certain of what HR is thinking or their so it is mostly speculation/hearsay/based on prior bids
4. Don't quit your job or stop your life just because you applied. It could be at least 5-6 months from today before you are able start training (if you are lucky enough to get a TOL(Temporary offer letter) that turns into an FOL(Final offer letter))
5. Most of all, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.

If you are curious as to what the timeline of the beginning steps of the last bid was, look in my signature below and that should help.

Do you have specialized experience in a military or civilian air traffic facility that demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform air traffic control work? This experience must have provided a comprehensive knowledge of appropriate air traffic control laws, rules, and regulations.

Would my FOL post academy count or only getting checked out at the facility?

Goodluck everyone! Advice based on my experience: Do everything in your power to return forms the day you get them. Some things will take a while like medical clearances, but a lot of the paperwork can be signed and returned within the same day. Be diligent and take some time to THOROUGHLY read the information they send you, and get it back to them ASAP!
When the time comes for the AT-SA (Air Traffic Skills Assessment) I used the website "www.JobTestPrep.com". They have a pretty comprehensive AT-SA study guide. It is pricy! ($80 for three month access if I remember correctly) but had I gone into the test without it, I would have been hopelessly lost.
Once again good luck!

Question. Can I you use my prior bid score (2018 bid) for this bid if I move to the next round? I received a "best-qualified" score but never received a TOL.

Did you receive any ratings? I'd say if you didn't, then it doesn't count, but could be a question for HRO

Question. Can I you use my prior bid score (2018 bid) for this bid if I move to the next round?
Yeah same...albeit my BQ score was the June 2019 bid.

IIRC your score is good for three years, something like that. Conventional wisdom in the past has been that if you didn't get a TOL your score wasn't good enough and you should re-take.

This time around it might be a little different, because the rule that they have to hire the same number of people from the two pools (within 10%) is no longer there. Depending on how many people apply that could mean you have a better or worse chance of getting hired in either pool. But you'll still likely see a score increase if you take the test again, which can't be a bad thing.
