That's like having a peeing section in a pool. Gun control is either all states the same or nothing. Having tough gun control in one city or state means nothing if all a gangbanger needs to do is drive to the state next door to buy what he needs.
This argument is brought up by gun control advocates all the time, but there isn’t much data to support it. This can be illustrated by looking at some studies:
“In most places, the majority of crime guns originate from within the state (e.g., see ATF 2000c). Moreover, national data suggests that nearly half of all crime guns are recovered within 25 miles of where they were purchased (ATF, 2002a: 43-44; Pierce et al., 2004).“
This is an example of trace data from the ATF, in this case Illinois:
Slide 7 shows that the vast majority of guns recovered in IL originated in IL, with the next closest origination state being IN, but the differences are not even close (5,782 vs 1,882). The guns originating in other states statistic also doesn’t account for guns on the books that came to IL in legal ways before they were used in crime, such as someone buying a gun from another state and having it sent to a local IL FFL for a legal interstate transfer, or someone moving to IL from another state and bringing their guns with them. This means that one cannot claim that all guns recovered in IL that originated in another state were trafficked, as that’s an assumption not supported by data.
Slide 8 shows the “time to crime” statistic, which is what investigators use to track trafficking, as a time to crime of under 3 years is a strong indicator of trafficking. You can see that while there is indeed a portion of recoveries that take place under 3 years, the vast majority do not, meaning they don’t have a strong indicator of trafficking.
I wish these statistics were brought to light more, because I’m tired of seeing the same old debunked arguments brought up by gun control advocates. There’s so many other things they blatantly lie about too, but that’s for another post.
