Government Shutdown

I don't feel guilty or self-loathing. I also never said that any of it is okay. I'm just not aware of any other position that I'm qualified for that would pay me as much. We have highly technical careers -- careers that there is generally one employer for.

I mentioned anesthesiologists above because they made a lot of money and immediately two people want to mention how much money they make which proves my original point that no one cares when you make more money.

So your point is that people don't give a shit because we make more money than them?

Controllers already deal with the stresses of our schedule and how that impacts our health and our personal lives. I don't know about you guys but I'd rather not be on an airplane that's being worked by a controller who is beat from working 6 days and stressed on how that impacts their home life then add on top of that stress about how they are going to make their financial obligations.

Not trying to sound dramatic but I think it would be in the public's best interest to limit the stress put on the people whose job it is keep them safe.

I’m saying that trying to drum up public support for something that hasn’t even happened yet isn’t going to be successful. I don’t care where you live: write “Struggling to survive on $73k per year” as a headline and let me know what kind of response you get.

But whatever. I’m done. I’m just “diminishing” ATC by being one of the guys that actually shows up for work instead of complaining on a public forum about sick leave.

Carry on, good people.
Who here is complaining about sick leave? All
I said is they’d have a tough time messing with you based on sicking out. I’ve showed up to all my shifts including OTs in case you wanted to throw stones.

Not really when you consider the fact that we’re forced to retire at 56

we are forced to retire but we basically get to collect social security early, get a pension, have the TSP on top of that, medical is subsidized I believe, for many people all of this amounts to close to if not over 100k annually, in retirement. that's unheard of in many other jobs. Yes, We are highly technical but also don't require any education for entry. It takes us years to certify but again that's on the job training while getting paid, its not like we are chemical engineers or whatever that require 6 years of education before collecting a paycheck. I think all he was saying is that the general public will only see that headline, and like dankvectorz said, it only plays well in new York and san fran. the rest of the country wont understand.

All that said, this is completely unacceptable and with a single income family with no pay check in sight this is very very scary. we should all share our stories and help each other out and leave it at that. the outside world will not understand and with the state of the media where most only listen to one side or the other and ignore any facts, our complaints wont go very far.

Anyone have an estimate or even a guess on when the government will reopen?

Longest shutdown in history was 21 days in 1995 under Bill Clinton, although history is no indicator of how what Trump will or will not do.

Have heard that if the government reopens by the 10th at the latest, our next paycheck should be on time? Anything after that will be the 29th at the earliest. Anyone hear anything else?

One thing I wish NATCA would do, is make this more personal to the senators or whoever on the Hill they are talking to. Let them know that there are members that if not paid at the end of the month will have to make hard decisions about getting money.

I'm pretty sure if local news stations started getting emails TSA agents, controllers and others national news would be pushing the info alot more.

My region requested that we write personal letters to our Senators, which are being overnighted to Washington D.C. tonight and hand delivered to our Senators later this week.

Can you give any more info, I'm in the Southern Region and I know folks at my facility would be willing to participate as well. Or is it to late to get it to them this week.

Also quick question does anyone know if the medical analyst are furloughed? I've got my medical coming up and need some info from them.

This is why natca in Washington is so important and having strong and supported legislative representatives. It allows some of our workforce to create relationships with our elected officials so we can call them and make them aware of the important things that impact our workforce. Writing letters in a coordinated effort is a great start, follow it up with calls from natca representatives that politicians know is a good one two punch followed by our natca national office doing what they do. Get involved and get educated. So we can prevent this crap.

And yes medical is open.
