Change from within is nearly impossible. When the entire national board comes out and signs written endorsements for "their guy" anyone that runs against them isn't running against one candidate but the entire national board. Add to it that the current leadership has travel expense accounts that cover solidarity events at locals. So they can travel around and more or less campaign while the union covers the costs. It's a huge advantage for the current leadership to network or get their message out to those that would actually vote. I was completely embarrassed by the way our union handled the Paul/Zilonis race. I had no dog in the fight but it was disgraceful how the Great Lakes region and people that supported Zilonis were treated and segregated at the PHL convention. I would love to see change to the election process and how members can campaign for national positions.
