Hiring Bid FAA-ATO-21-ALLSRCE-73599

Ooh MA where ? I’m from Lawrence. And same here that’s just way too much. I’m gonna look into shipping my car instead
The slums of Brockton lol I’m thinking the same honestly I’ll see you in Okc

What’s the general time line people are looking at after getting their clearances done?
I’d say anywhere between 1-4 months from what I’ve seen on here the latest being 5 without tier 2

Ok I got a question. If someone gets put into the "next available class" which lets just say is en route, does that mean they don't take all the other classes like Tower Cab or Terminal? And does that also mean that that certain individual will eventually get placed into an ARTCC? Just curious on how this works, and if anybody had any idea.

Yes. You either attend enroute classes or terminal classes. Then that is the type facility you go to. Years down the line after you certify you can transfer between the facilities and may or may not have to go back to the Academy.

Gotcha, but what about control towers? Or is that just integrated with terminal?

Broadly, there are three types of ATC facilities: Enroute, Terminal, and Flight Service Station (FSS is technically ATC, and technically 2152, but not really-really "controllers").

TRACONs, ATCTs, and combined ATCT/TRACONs are all Terminal.

In the past you used to be able to be placed at a TRACON on an off-the-street bid. No more. Now you attend Basics and then Initial Tower Cab. You will be placed either at a standalone ATCT, or a combined ATCT/TRACON. If you go to a combined facility you will train on the tower cab first and then return to OKC for radar training before returning to your facility to train in the TRACON.

Why did they stop placing people at TRACONs on OTS bids? Are TRACONs that much harder than centers?

Why did they stop placing people at TRACONs on OTS bids?
Not sure, before my time, but I think the gist is that centers have a lot more people—more controllers and more support/training staff—and a lot more resources, and they're just better set up in general to take people off the street and teach them what they need to know. The enroute class at OKC doesn't even train them to work R-side (actual radar controller talking to planes), only D-side (assistant controller issuing releases to FSS and coordinating with other sectors' D-sides). Apparently each center will teach you exactly how they want you to work R-side when you get there.

In comparison TRACONs work much less airspace and have much fewer controllers, even the big TRACONs like New York, NorCal/SoCal, etc. And those are just the big ones; you can have very small standalone TRACONs like R90, Y90, P80, U90, etc. I guess the training program and staffing at those facilities just aren't designed for teaching people radar techniques from the ground up.

Are TRACONs that much harder than centers?
As a Terminal controller, even at a slower facility, I am legally obligated to respond: Yes.
