Just Lost the Biggest Opportunity of My Life

Just want to know what my options are. I was doing very well in basics but ran out of time on the final test. I made one mistake and now it’s all over. What can I possibly do?

Look into another career field that has a better schedule. Even if you’re at the max higher age you’re young and will have plenty of opportunities to do something else.

It probably sucks right now, but take your time and recoup then figure out something else to do.

Would I be able to apply next bid? Is there ANY recourse? I can’t believe the one time I make a mistake in this process it’s here. I just wish I could get a second chance.

i would take this as a sign you are not meant for the job. even if you passed basics by guessing a few questions correctly, how do you think you would do with the actual air traffic which is way harder and more strict on time than a stupid test? i don't even say this to be mean..but do you think you would have an enjoyable career as a sketchy controller? it would be nerve racking af

I don’t think it’s a good idea to wait and reapply. Move on with your life and start the next chapter. Apply again if you want but don’t plan for it and put all your eggs in that basket.

I tell everyone I know that if I couldn’t do atc I would try to do what my brother does.

Bro I know it’s bad but maybe one day you will look back at this and see it was for the best. And maybe you never will, but as long as you don’t give up on life be aware there is way better then a 50-50 chance that you will.

No reason to get into it here but there are countless forums online where you can read that the pay and QOL in this career is average at best, and the prestige of the job title wears off really fast once you get into it and see how unimportant we really are and the incompetence of everything surrounding you.

If you can’t time manage well enough to finish a 182 question test in 2 hours, you probably don’t have the skills to be an air traffic controller. That’s almost 45 seconds per question on material you’re already familiar with. There is no recourse other than to find a different line of work.

Not trying to be mean, but more so realistic...

Basics, including the final test, is literally the easiest part of this whole career. It's easier than the ATSA. This was material that you NEEDED to know well enough to finish this test with a lot of time to spare. Everything you were to learn going forward would build upon this basic information. Yes, there is a lot to know, but there was to be a LOT more to know. You would not have had time to continue to learn the basics. The basics needed to be learned before the test. One mistake would not have failed you. It is always (let me emphasize ALWAYS) a serries of failure that lead to negative outcomes in aviation.

If ATC is the end-all-be-all for you then look into paying for your CTO at a school like Beaver County. From there you may be able to be hired by a contract tower and then move on to a prior experience bid. Or go to your local Military recruiting office and say you want to be ATC.

Good luck.
