DWI as a Trainee

Throw away for obvious reasons.

I'm a D2 at a Z and got picked up for a DWI over the weekend. First offense of any kind, much less alcohol related, and I don't know what I need to do on the work side of things/what I should expect. I know prior to academy this kind of thing is a death sentence but I'm well out of my probationary period and have certs - basically who should I talk to first and what do I need to do?

My lawyer is pretty confident I can avoid a conviction and even suspension of my license. Just want to get ahead of things as much as possible

If you are still on probation you will be fired, if you are past the 12 months you will get through it but expect the whole gamut of counselor appointments, rehab if you are an alcoholic or not, being off the floor for at least six months, being made the lowest priority when you get back, they will try to trick you to sign a “last chance” agreement, depending on the facility NATCA could be a massive help or tell you “you are just lucky to still have a job, how could you jeopardize having the greatest job in the world” and support you the same as if a OS got the DWI, etc…..

And all that will be the same if the charges are reduced or eventually dismissed as well.

Talk to your rep first, full stop

Last chance agreements can’t be forced?

Thanks folks. My rep should have been my first thought but I was a little panicking but it's all reported appropriately now and I'm on track. Appreciate the guidance.

If you are able to save your job somehow, they will probably have you sign an agreement that says you can’t drink alcohol for the rest of your career.

If you are going to need a drug/alcohol/addiction specialist to provide a statement that you are not in fact an alcoholic, then Don't use EAP. Pony up the money and get a real specialist.

Guy I used to work with got a DWI at his last facility. Went through the rigamarole with the FAA with counseling, etc. Chances are you’ll be fine and will have to sign a last chance waiver. His letter basically said he could never drink again for the rest of his career. Flight doc cleared him to return to work after completing his courses and counseling sessions. Good luck. Don’t be a dumb fuck.

Whatever you do, don't quit while you're a trainee. My buddy was in the same scenario and decided to leave the agency which resulted in getting blacklisted

We had a trainee who not only got a dui, but a few months later tried doing it again but his cars immobilizer locked him out. Judge sent him to Rikers for a week. That was almost 10 years ago and he’s still here.
