This is probably right, the staffing number would literally be half of what the FAA is so that saves 50% right there, contract towers typically have a ATM and no sups, the pay is less, benefits are lower and the pay ranges are small, almost flat, there are no guys with 30 years in there making almost double what a new controller there makes.

Lack of pension is the biggest money saver.

Why would someone stuck at a level 4 be against getting contracted? You get a huge list of places to transfer to when your facility closes.

I would say generally speaking we shouldn’t want facilities to close cause that means less controllers and as a union you should be looking to keep as many jobs as you can. But speaking from a “id like to get the fuck out of here” standpoint getting contracted is great for that.

I don know why people think that closing low level towers would fix any staffing. The FAA would stop hiring because, POOF we just made 1,000 CPCs into trainees! And then you would be forcing people to move to facilities they may not certify at, which is a dick move. I know some people think they should be fired anyway, but some of them are probably excellent controllers where they are, and happy to stay in their comfort zone/home town.

If they don’t want to leave could it be possible to offer them to stay at current pay? Then the new employees would make less with the contract. Unions sell out their young all the time. Raise retirement contributions, higher priced medical insurance etc.
