I apologize if this has been asked/explained, but if you drive, will the FAA pay for your actual costs up to the cost of a flight, or will you just receive the cost of the flight in reimbursement? I have an over 24 hour drive and I have the option of using hotel points. Basically is that use it or loose it or get it all monies?
Officially they’ll reimburse the lesser of the two, which would almost always be the cost of the flight. However in practice, the people who drove in my class got an extra $100 or so above the actual flight costs in order to make it closer to even when you consider the reimbursed Ubers and checked bags. You’ll still likely come out a bit in the red if you have that long of a drive, but the good news is that you don’t need to submit receipts - they’ll just give you a flat amount depending on where you’re coming from, so you can use hotel points and not lose out on anything.
