Highlight:
The FAA would also initiate planning and land acquisition for the replacement of the FAA’s 21 Enroute air traffic control facilities (ARTCCs), which are approximately 61 years old on average. The FAA’s 21 ARTCCs were placed throughout the NAS because of the legacy technology limitations. These limitations are no longer an obstacle and therefore the FAA can consolidate and reduce the number of ARTCCs, which would save FAA operations funding.

So is it 21 - 12 or like leave Alaska and Hawaii alone 19-12. They could move Albuquerque, Los Angeles, Oakland, and Seattle to Vegas?

Look, it goes without saying that this administration has been an absolute trainwreck and total dumpster fire. Every week has just been a continuous stream of bad news that’s only further demoralized our already diminished workforce.

That said, I’m keeping an open mind with today’s news. Our equipment sucks. Everyone knows this. If NCEPT is going to force me to stay at my Level 7 up/down for the entirety of my career, at least give us a version of ASDE and some upgraded equipment. One of our neighboring facilities went ATC Limited the other day due to a total radar outage. It’s not just happening at the EWR sector. Another neighboring facility has the digitized flight strips and newest tech. If we could get a version of that it’s an improvement.

Not wild about the consolidation element of all this, and I’m sure it’s an indicator of what’s to come. But speaking from somebody at a mid-level facility, I don’t think this is necessarily bad news for us. I guess we will see what happens.

It’s always good news when the agency you work for gets an injection of cash. Closer to a raise for ATC.

Anyone that thinks this is going to happen during our time is an idiot. Takes years to consolidate a low level tracon. It’s still the government.
At the speed of government I agree with you, it shouldn't take years to consolidate. Take U90 moving to Phoenix. They say it would take 3-5 years to consolidate the 2. But if it's collocated, it could be moved in less than a year. It's all lip service.

If motivated, building new centers, could be done in 5 years.
