Is it crazy to want to go from a 12 to a 9 for QOL reasons?
No. And starting at the top of a payband day 1 at a facility isn't the same as starting below the bottom of the payband. So often a downgrade is the best move to make. The problem can be getting into that high level facility first.

Probably more difficult to get out of the 12 in the current state of staffing.

The amount of CPCs who want to transfer to 8/9 updowns as a first choice is low. So I don't blame the FAA for trying to figure something out. But a major part of the problem is the nature of NCEPT itself. It's too hard to move so why waste a move on a mid level? The FAA has to either acknowledge that the terminal level requires a farm system, which requires movement. Or NATCA needs to have them flatten the pay scales since they seem to think everyone is doing the same job.
As someone who’s trying to transfer to an 8 up/down, you’re right and I hate it lol.
Big time agree on all of that though.

Seriously? It directly affects the workforce. It affects our staffing and transfer process.
They change how many people they are going to higher every year. That’s affects your staffing too. They don’t brief you on it. It doesn’t affect how NCEPT procedurally works.

You know what changed because you sit on forums all day. So what else did you want the faa to tell you?

I’m not talking about the faa

That's true, but most people would rather be stuck making 200k than 100k.

There's a reddit thread /atc where a guy is complaining that 275k (what he would make) isn't enough to live in the bay area. And it's like... my brother in christ, you get a government retirement and over a quarter million a year. And you might not feel wealthy but most people who live in the bay area literally make less than half of that.

Found the supe
Please explain?

Like I said I work at a poorly staffed 9. We barely have gotten anybody through NCEPT yet have lost and will be losing several people to the ZOA/A80/MIA MOU. We are at essentially mandatory six day weeks with lots of holdover mixed in. The few prior experience hires we've gotten lately have all washed out as the military doesn't seem to be able to teach basic radar fundamentals that transfer to the FAA. The current system has completely abandoned us.

What facility do you work at? Asking for a friend

Either you don’t live in the Bay Area or never been there. And I think your living standards are lower than some. I personally agree with this Reddit person. I believe the ATC profession should allow you to live in a safe neighborhood where you don’t have to watch your back when leaving to work before the sun is up and coming back past midnight. Where you feel safe for your wife and kids to walk around the neighborhood at any time of the day. The sacrifices we make and the responsibility we carry should allow us to live a decent life. Also, with our shift work, our pay should be enough for the whole family so your wife doesn’t have to work. And 275k in the Bay Area is on the lower end to attaining this.

Super tone deaf take and not in line with fucking reality. The focus should be on getting lower level facilities in HCOL places paid more before worrying about dudes making 300k.

If you have a family of four with a non working spouse you can pay 8000/month in rent and still have more TAKE HOME pay left over than the median gross income in the area. And you get to retire and get paid 200k to sit on your ass until you die. You're fucking fine jesus christ.
