Anyone who thinks quitting the union is a path to success is naive. That is a road to career suicide. You have to understand that the Union literally controls most facilities. I dont mean "have a strong collaborative seat at the table", I mean controls outright full stop (at least the day to day personnel, training, & work conditions stuff). It's the equivalent of saying "If Trump/Clinton/whoever gets elected, I'm moving to Canada." That may make you feel good and empowered because at least you are taking an affirmative action, voting w your feet, payroll deductions, whatever... but it wont get you what you want. You'll get fucked w and wash out, but be able to say you stood up. There is wisdom in knowing not to fight the battles you cant win, that I havent fully learned myself
yah just gonna do it after. Whenever that is lol

Love the people who work in a union job that bitch about the union not doing what they want so they quit or threaten to quit. You work in a job where the union plays a huge part in every part of your job and you quitting removes your only voice in that process. I’m not some Natca dick rider but I think overall the union does more good than bad. Do you guys really think that a few of you quitting is going to change anything or help you? You’re just going to be known as the guy who quit the union because they were trying to protect members and keep facilities open during an epidemic.

Think people are just frustrated about the current situation and feel ignored by the union

I understand being frustrated but I think quitting the union does the opposite of what you want.

It’s ok for people to express their concern. That is what this place is for. Anytime someone speaks out slightly to question the unions decisions you are there defending them. You don’t ride it, you bend over and grab your ankles for it.

yeah it’s okay for people to express concern but not okay for me to try to explain the other side. Gtfoh

This is true, I don’t believe anyone that say they are quitting the union. I heard dozens say that after the slight dues increase 5 years ago, after complaining about the seniority formulas, and most recently the NCEPT complaints. When January came all three of those years of the hot button issues, the union either showed a decent net increase in membership or maybe a single digit loss the one time. And it is true that quitting the union as a trainee is career suicidal, some talk about it but few have ever had the balls to do it.

This brand new generation of controllers could be a little different with that but I highly doubt it. The newest generation seems to have the entitlement sense and the overconfidence that they would easily certify anywhere because they are so good (as others said talent is only at most 50% of the certification equation). But I think they fall in line, the same generation said they would quit over NCEPT and then basically literally zero people did this year, nobody I know even cancelled their PAC donations.

???

PAC contributions were the coolest way to virtue signal and shame fellow brothers and sisters to test their solidarity purity and fraternal bonafides; before masks! Mask shaming is the new religion. Yet bizarrely not in ATC facilities? Worlds upside down welcome to 2020

I'm not quoting anyone, but the number one way to fail training would be quitting the union. Certifications take place in 5 years when traffic picks back up, until then I'll keep my flight data while working 30 hours a week at my other job. We've all made sacrifices for the #greatestjobintheworld I used to walk to work in the snow, uphill to proudly stuff strips, then walk uphill home, in the snow, to wash my trainers call knowing one day I could join the club of elite aviation experts.
Plus if traffic is low, and this is the new normal, then normal traffic means the union is pushing to get all of them back in facilities and certified a.s.a.p. I am 100% sure they aren't arguing for keeping these modified schedules as long as possible
You can @ me, it’s fine. Clearly only chosen individuals here are allowed to be the sarcastic types. I am not quitting the union. I actually think the reps at my facility are doing a great job at the local level. That said, I can’t disagree 100% with the other trainees that feel like we’re getting the shit end of the stick *at times*.

They have to get off a certification based pay scale since half the time we can’t even train. That’s even bigger than the pandemic. I’ve actively trained for 5 of 24 months.

There you go. Maybe just bump everyone up two D bands. They're already paying a bunch of us to do nothing, what's the difference if they start paying people more to do nothing?
How does the saying go? Money machine go brrrrrrr.
