The FAA as an organization today is struggling with executing some of its most basic functions, some that it has done for decades. Illegal charter ops are increasing in number, flight delays and cancellations are getting worse, industry titans we oversee are performing regulatory capture in everything from manufacturing safety inspections to airport slot allocation, and much, much more. But it's not just the the activities we perform that have been harmed, but morale across the board is low, and the quality of life for employees and contractors has decreased significantly.
This may merely be a mostly anonymous internet forum, but we have to start talking about it somewhere outside of the organization itself, where the discussions themselves often don't start, take place under untoward influence, or simply peter out or go nowhere. Here, we have new threads every couple of weeks about the latest bad news, which fall away as the next big thing comes along, so I thought it'd help for us to have one thread dedicated to the idea of organizational reform.
I'd say that our discussion fits roughly four categories of topics (w/ examples), but don't take it as a hard and fast rule:
Causes - The underlying issues which create problems. Ex: Excessive political interference.
Symptoms - The problems harming the organization. Ex: Low staffing in many areas (not just ATC).
Solutions - Ways to "fix" the causes, or at least mitigate them. Ex: Making FAA spending "mandatory" during gov't shutdowns.
Tools - Strategies for actually implementing solutions. Ex: Raising awareness for an issue on social media.
If you have any ideas, suggestions, or points of discussion, please put your thoughts out here, whether it's a brief post or long as a couple of paragraphs. We need as wide a variety of input as possible, from all sectors of the organization, from all across the country. HR, training, tech ops, flight standards, management, trainee or retired, it does not matter who you are, your thoughts are important. Please consider inviting those you know, even if they've never used this site, to add their two cents.
We can only tackle a goal as large as reforming this organization by airing our thoughts and openly discussing them in good faith.
