Terminal Class pass rate

It’s also crazy that people like Jballen, FOS, and dozens upon dozens of the ATC chat boards over the years have seemed to disproportionately not make it over the years. I’m not saying it’s related, at least not now. Maybe it was in the past on the jetcareers and stuckmic forum where people would be stupid enough to post their entire hiring step history in their post signature so that anyone in the FAA could easily identify them and then proceed to blast the FAA and the Academy on the boards all the time.

As happy as I was to pass it was gut wrenching watching people that you bonded with for 3 months get escorted out with tears in their eyes.
Yea, I hesitate to say it “ruined” our weekend after passing, but it was pretty close. Somber weekend instead of a cheerful one really

While it's sad, those of you that did make it need to get your head back on and get ready for the next round. You're first facilities will be completely different than the academy. Sorry Fos and Jballen, good luck!

Every class has some who made it that shouldn't have and some who should have made it but didn't.

It's the worst part about the academy.

What makes it shittier is the fact that the ones who shouldn't have made it will probably get sorted at their facilities but the ones who didn't will never get another chance.

I thought that at the academy. Now through center training I’m thinking if you can’t pas the academy portion that’s pretty not good.

People who kicked ass throughout the entire academy have a bad day and don't make it. They cruise through problems 10-13 which are harder than most PA scenarios and then trip up at the finish line and its all for naught.

The center version is(or was) slightly different because there are more point opportunities throughout the class. 90% of the tower classes points come at the end.

Center academy is harder, no question, but this is the terminal thread.

Everyone loves to drop that line (even people who went through the academy in 2008-2011 when the pass rate was 95%), and while it’s true at facility center and terminal training is almost always incredibly harder then the academy, there is nothing in the field that is truly like the PVs or Evals where it all comes down to one day evaluated by people who never met you before and have different grading standards. Yes, there are pass/fail simulator problems at the center and most facilities but unless the training program is incredibly jacked up or you are at N90 the facility does all it can to pass you through those, plus you get at least one (and sometimes several) retakes if you fail one.

Wanted to chime in...I just took enroute eval’s a few days ago. I needed a 39.3 (so a 40) on the last one and guess what I got...a 39. If I had done one more point out I would’ve made it. If I had apreq’d a guy climbing 30 seconds sooner I would’ve made it. Hell, if I had gotten just one more question right on the ckt I would’ve made it. They checked all my scores for errors and found none. There was nothing to TR. I was out of luck. They said it was the closest score they’ve seen. 69.93 out of the necessary 70. Cried when I got back to the classroom. Cried some more when I got back to my apartment. I blew it. This will haunt me for a long long time. Just had to share my story and let you guys know who failed that you’re not alone.

I generally disagree with what you have to say but I will add that I think this is spot on.

I've always said that OKC is the hardest part of training. It's not something to go to your facility and complain about but at the end of everything, checkrides are cake compared to evals...especially the pressure of evals at OKC.

Ill never forget the evaluators come and talk to those of us who passed and said, “Congratulations but know today will be the easiest day of the rest of your careers. The real facilities are no joke blah blah blah” and I couldn’t eye roll enough. I get what he was saying but jeez come on...

Agree. that line of thinking so Ham & egger Cookie cutter bullshit. Passing is sometimes decided on a razors edge. Dont give me that cliche nonsense that its all for the best. Its not a perfect science. Everyone who is a CPC on here will readily tell you that they work with very poor controllers who are terrible at their jobs and dangerous. Sometimes lifes legit unfair, even if that makes the yes men do gooders uncomf

Are you like trolling in the other direction now?

Needed a sneeze to pass. Just 35 points to lock it in. After receiving a 90+ on my previous local run, I was all smiles and excited to give my instructor the final thumbs up after being the last run of PA's. Everything was great, no missed wake timers, no missed wake turbulance advisories, no delays, 16 departures shot out, no runway separation problems nothing. It was all sunshine and rainbows until good ol Barron 71GL came in and ruined my life. Quite literally. I gave him a pattern entry and a right 360 for spacing. I thought it was enough but it wasn't. I lost control of my sequence and had an unplanned go around. After that, it was a frantic effort to clean up and re establish the pattern. Unfortunately it was too late, the PA was over and I had lost way too many small points to pass. I held in the tears pretty well but it was mostly due to being in denial that I was going home. It didn't hit me until seeing the security dude in my rearview escorting me out with no where to be and nothing to do that it became real and I broke down. It was quite the experience, lucky to have had a shot. I'm thankful I was apart of a pretty rad group of people. Seems like just yesterday we were picking up scraps from Cowboys and exploring the secret underground tunnels.

Life's not fair tho

Was there any amount of studying or anything that could have been done differently for this to be avoided? Reason that I ask, is I have no prior experience and am about to enroll in the academy in the coming weeks.
