FAM Flight Tips/Tricks

Both my FDTs were over 8 hours. I spoke with the FDT lady on the phone and she said you simply have to put in the "Notes" at the bottom "OT waived". Was no issue at all

So what do people do with flights that are over 8 hours because of a long layover. I’ve read some answers but my ATM is saying he can’t do that because it would put into OT.
It is my understanding that you cannot fam on flights over 8 hours, but it's been almost 5 years since I fammed so my info might not be correct.

My first one this year back in June had a 7 hour layover in SFO because they refused to let me leave from SFO instead of MRY

I used the combined block times of the flights. I said in the remarks that the block times were less than 8 hours and I would use a "split-shift" to meet the 8hrs window. I didn't have any issue with it.

Request non-consecutive hours in the comment section when making the request is how I was told to word it.

I think your origin has to be within 50 miles of your duty station but then again I was under the impression that under no circumstances could your FDT be longer than your duty day (per the ELMS) but everyone is saying they don't have that issue so I could be full of shit....

So if i want to FDT from JFK-HNL all i have to do is put "Waive Overtime" in remarks? Lol

It only says if your origin is >50 mi they have to authorize duty time for the difference in time for commuting over 50 miles Ex. SFO is 104 mi away, they are required to authorize extra duty time for me to drive the extra 54 miles.
Now when I asked the lady she said that is only in there for airports with no major air service that have to drive far to a bigger airport. I don’t see how it should make a difference and that distinction is surely not in the document but whatever. You 100% should be able to waive OT and do JFK-HNL. I did MRY-SFO 7 hour layover then SFO-EWR on one trip. They shouldn’t care how much OT we waive, they’re not paying for it

I even had one FDT guy go so far as to say he didn’t want to approve my trip if I had an early shift the next day because I got in late and wouldn’t have the 9 hrs between work. I was like, dude you are WAAAYYYYYY outside your scope of approval. My flights mirroring my shifts, or what time, or how late, or how many stops, or how weird, or how funky the layover, not your fcking business. I think they are haters because they want to fly “for free” too.

Sweet. Thanks! Both those comments I’ll combine somehow.
Waive OT or talk to your ATM about a split shift. If you did a split shift, the layover time wouldn’t count for your duty day, just the flying time

Those in the know: are the two trips per year required to be in the same calendar year, fiscal year, or rolling twelve-month period?

I.e. if I want to take full advantage of the program, do I need to take two trips before the end of this December?

Calender year and yes

My understanding is calendar year and I don’t see anything indicating otherwise

Anyone know about the same airport rule ? For example if your from NY and have multiple airports you can fly out of, can you go from JFK to MIA and then return from FLL to LGA. IF you have already done let’s say a JFK-FLL and then FLL-JFK. Does that count as you going to the same airport ? Technically your only flying out of an airport you have already been at but arriving at a new one.

Just file it and see if it gets approved. Worst case is they return it to you and say no.

My understanding is you can’t arrive at the same airport twice (in a year). JFK-MIA/FLL-LGA & JFK-FLL/FLL-JFK sounds like it should work imo, but they’ve disapproved other things I believe should be okay before so who knows really until you try. It’s also a pretty dumb rule to begin with considering we only get 2 per year. You can have drastically different experiences landing at the same airport in different seasons or even days of the week, but whatever

Can anyone recommend of what to put in “other” to get the full 8 hours. I’m 30 mins short.

Is your SUP really making you account for that time?
Well We have to fill the time sheet and turn that in and I maxed out the pre flight post flight paperwork times. They don’t really check to see what you did for “other” just didn’t know what sounds reasonable.
