Heard zoom classes are being conducted these days and was curious how things were going/
I'm headed to a 12 in the next couple of months and wanted to see how the transitions have been while this covid is going on.
are you just expected to report the first day to collect ipads and then check in on zoom when they give you a class date to start?
Are the zoom classes all day? how long are the zoom classes expected to last? weeks? months?
any word on TSEW? are they giving the option to skip?

Zoom classes suck for everybody involved. Expect them to continue until you get recalled.

It’s completely facility specific. If there are other new people starting around the same time, they may set up a class. If you’re the only one you’ll probably just be on admin, assuming phase 2 of resuming OJT hasn’t started yet.

Our Zoom class was half day a few days a week, the rest was self study. Lasted 3 or 4 weeks, now we’re just waiting for the ok to go in.

I personally don’t think furloughs have been seriously discussed, but I have no doubt there’s been pressure from on high to give people sitting at home something to do. It’s perfectly reasonable. There have been a ton of people sitting at home for months collecting a full paycheck, many making well into six figures. Nothing wrong with the idea of asking them to do something a little bit productive (in theory).

There is absolutely nothing productive in the majority of these Zoom classes whatsoever. The other day in ours, they literally looked up pictures of “cool airplanes” for an hour, took and hour break, watched some YouTube videos for awhile, and called it a day. They’re completely useless and just busywork. Everyone I know would much rather just go to work.

This is true, however can you imagine if they gave you all the next class you needed in March? And you don’t come back until December? Would be a joke when you all hit the floor. Every TRB excuse would start with “but there was a lapse between classes and the floor, I need my hours reset and a new class!”

Not that we won’t see that happen anyway just with a gap in training.

I mean, I think there could be some usefulness in the Zoom stuff, there’s just been 0 effort put into them. Even the people who were up for classroom work and went through the PowerPoints were told it wasn’t going to count and everything would need to be repeated in-person once returning to the facility. Now they’ve devolved into literally nothing. Half the conversations aren’t even ATC related anymore. An instructor talked about fishing for 45 mins a few weeks back.

My facility has made sort of a big deal about it. We have made our way through all of our stage 3 courses and have restarted them as well as having additional training/speaker sessions. I'm not going to say they are making me a better trainee or more prepared for being a controller but they aren't completely useless, for us at least. It's definitely not the same, or as engaging, as sitting in the classroom with the instructor right there teaching.

One of those you get out of it what you put in situations. While they talk about dumb shit do some self study. I’m sure you have all your material that is needed.

OP- you’re nuts for giving up your essential status to become nonessential. Don’t do it.

We’ve had two people leave since July for greener pastures and they offered to stay longer if they started paying them their new salary and the FAA said no ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It would be a tough situation without a doubt - but there’s no way in heck I’d give up the essential status when “anything can happen.”

especially if you’re transferring to a 12 where undoubtably there will be multiple people ahead of you for training
