Just out of curiosity, how many other people are like TRULY off the street? Seems like a lot of people may not have ATC experience, but still have some sort of interest or aviation adjacent job. But I dropped out of music school and am currently an insurance agent. Literally 0 aviation background. Anyone else similar?

0 aviation connection. I’m working in printing and packaging.

I have about 6500 hours in-sim/vatsim, constantly reading things pilot friends send me, watching atc videos, going for a PPL, test for microsofts sim, etc. Safe to say I've been as deep as you can be for many years.

What made you want to do this with 0 background? That's super interesting to me.

I have about 6500 hours in-sim/vatsim, constantly reading things pilot friends send me, watching atc videos, going for a PPL, test for microsofts sim, etc. Safe to say I've been as deep as you can be for many years.

What made you want to do this with 0 background? That's super interesting to me.

I’m OTS but my father is a retired ATC and has been pilot / copilot for a couple different company’s private planes since retiring. I’m part automotive technician, but mostly a rotating electric rebuilder. This is my first post here actually, I’ve been lingering on this thread a while seeing where others are at in comparison to me. I received my EODS approvals on the 28th of July. Not sure of timeframe between those and medical or CIL, however. My dad flew a Cessna 182 when I was growing up, he was part owner (out of ten people) and eventually bought his own 64’ Beechcraft Bonanza V-tail which he sold last year. I’ve been in and around airplanes my whole life but never got my PPL. I applied to a bid back in 2012-2013 and never heard back but tried again on the 2020 bid since I would like to get out of the mechanical field and here I am. So I guess one could say I have some ties to the aeronautics so I’m excited to see where this takes me.

Why did you drop out to get into insurance, if you don't mind me asking? Was it because of a lack of viable careers in music?

I also wanted to go to music school, but I didn't because it's way too expensive, and it doesn't seem like that field has many jobs unless you have big-time connections or you're super talented like Charlie Puth, who went to Berklee.

I dropped out because I was immature and a horrible student. Didn't want to keep flushing money down the drain if I wasn't making real progress toward a degree. I just wanted to teach though. I still perform every now and then, but teaching was what I was passionate about. I actually worked in a wilderness therapy program for years before I met my wife. I decided that I couldn't live in the woods for 8 days at a time every other week AND maintain a marriage. I LOVED that job though. Switched to insurance just for the solid 9-5 schedule. I help out with a local marching band in the fall, and a buddy I teach with is a pilot. He told me about ATC, and I was immediately sold. So here I am.

A buddy of mine who is a pilot told me about it. Honestly the pay/benefits and the fact that I didn't need a degree were the biggest selling points. The fact that planes are cool is just an added bonus.

Did any of y'all receive an updated timeline to return your e-QIP after sending fingerprints in? I am coming up quickly on the "15 calendar days" indicated in the initial security email, and am wondering if they expect me to have that bad boy done by Thursday despite not having access to it yet.

Also, does the "x" next to the SF-85P underneath the e-QIP section of my security email mean I'm slated for terminal, or does everyone get an SF-85P? It seems substantially similar to the SF-86 from what I can tell.

I filled out the SF-86 for Terminal when I was hired a few years ago, and my understanding was that everyone does that even if you don't end up getting an actual security clearance. It may have changed, but it may be worth reaching out to your security POC to double-check.

I emailed my Security POC the day I mailed off my fingerprints and they sent me the e-QIP information the next day.

I've done a lot of maturing since then. I'm actually looking forward to a chance at redeeming myself. I know I'm capable. I just didn't put in the work in college.

I believe the 2021 experience bid is expecting to hear news today. Hopefully the same holds true for us... maybe possibly... probably not
