Dear ZDV NATCA Local,
I hope this message finds you well. I understand that there has been some confusion and misinformation circulating regarding discussions about the possibility of upgrading five ARTCCs, including Denver Center. Frankly, the truth has been bent and distorted for political gains and it's important to address this matter quickly and transparently to ensure accurate information reaches all members.
Contrary to recent statements, there was never a concrete plan to upgrade five centers outside of the Appendix A of the Slate Book and a validated traffic count program such as ABACUS. An idea was initially mentioned by Rich Santa in October 2022 at the Center FacRep meeting in Boulder, CO, before any discussion with the NEB. The NEB later discussed the concept at a meeting in San Antonio in October 2022, raising questions about the process and feasibility. However, no evidence of a real option was presented, and the matter was dropped without any formal vote or decision.
During a Center Rep call in December 2023, this "option" resurfaced and was inaccurately framed as a possibility that was blocked by the NEB. To clarify, the NEB never voted on this matter; rather, discussions centered around the feasibility and process of such an initiative. The subsequent narrative blaming the NEB for blocking a nonexistent plan is inaccurate.
In our recent NEB meeting, it was emphasized that Rich's idea was never a real possibility but rather an exploration of forming a group to investigate the potential for an upgrade. This clarification aims to dispel any confusion and address the misleading information that has been circulating.
I want to emphasize that Megan, your FacRep, is a dedicated and caring representative. Any frustration or anger directed towards her is misplaced. The NEB is committed to informing the membership accurately and responsibly, and in this instance, that did not occur. I understand the affect this misinformation may have had, and I want to assure you that our commitment remains focused on fair and immediate compensation for all our members.
It's unfortunate that we need to clarify this situation, but it's crucial for the unity and solidarity of our union. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out.
In Solidarity,
Alex Navarro III
