Enroute Class pass rate

The most important thing in Radar is don't hit anything. To not hit anything you have to scan well. Scan for departures, airspace and the ACL. Forget the phones or tasks meant to distract you . . . look for those things that will cost you 12+ points and only take care of other things when you're damn sure your not going to hit anything. Yeah you have to know the LOAs and SOPs but all the stuff needed on evals is stuff you'll know from just running practice problems.

This is pretty accurate. You’ll be scanning, everything is okay, you might see a point out or something that needs to be done in a couple minutes, then BAM. Greenwood calls for a departure, now you missed your point out because you took too long.

That’s something you have to develop on your own. The only wrong way of doing it is catching tunnel vision.
Couldn't disagree more in the context of the Academy. Sure everyone develops their own technique but there kinda is a best way to scan the airspace. Run out 4 minute vector lines. Start in the northern portion of the airspace ("the chimney") where things happen quickly. Then scan the approaches for those low and slow assholes. Then scan each aircraft not already checked for position and altitude.

The chimney is so dumb. Who designs a sector like that. Why is Memphis gerrymandering their sectors

Solid advice.

The problem is at the academy and even at the facility. No one really teaches you how to scan a radar scope

I still have no idea how I scan a radar scope. I just look at things. I can teach my trainees different techniques, like going clockwise, altitudes, outside in or whatever, but I just look at it like a dog watching tv. Then I push the button and say words.

Not sure who's keeping score out there, but... our class just finished, 6 out of 13 made it. Evals were pretty brutal for some guys who were doing really well otherwise. Our already-dogshit list got worse after we lost all those guys. We ended up with:

ZNY
ZID
ZLC
ZOA
ZLA
ZID

Not the best list but congrats on passing.

If you’ve got any questions about ZLA let me know.

You only have one ZNY and one ZOA. That isn't that horrible of a list.

I’ve seen worse lists for sure

ZLC ain’t half bad. The outdoors activities are really second to none. You have world class skiing 20 minute drive up any canyon. The best National Parks 2-5 hour drive away. Pretty quick checkout time. Downsides are the pollution in the valley and surprisingly high cost of living for any remotely desirable location to live. And the federal cola is just ‘rest of US’ which is an absolute joke.

Yeah, Indy and Salt Lake went 1-2-3. They aren't bad options, just not anything that our class was hoping for.

Not the best list but congrats on passing.

That's where I'm going. I will likely hit you up!
