DOT holiday time off

If I had a full day of annual leave on the 30th and come in and work 5 hours, can I convert the last three hours of AL to EA? Our management has been denying all these EA requests
I had a full day of annual a month ago on one of these early release days and asked if I could change 3 hours of the leave to admin and was told no, it can't be pre approved per the guidance or whatever. Idk how any controllers could actually get this leave approved, but if someone figures it out, could you let me know?

Now this is something Natca should fight. Most of those office jobs wouldn't exist if it wasn't for us and all the deals we get.
You realize this is a department of transportation thing, and controllers aren’t the only employees of the department? My guess we make up less than 25percent of that work force and we are already compensated more than the other 75 percent. Even with the extra 3 hours They don’t “get more” and we still receive more compensation for having to work.

Just a guess though.

Nah i just think that DOT management doesn’t realize how these policies don’t work for certain work groups so our union should absolutely mansplain it to them

I always manage to get about 75% of the dayshift out early. The real reason you can’t get out is because either:

a. Your OS/OM is too lazy and lacks creativity.
b. Your OS/OM knows they can’t get to 100% shoves, so they don't want to hear the stuck guys cry.
c. We know the ones who stay will bitch.

Stagger shifts. Don't complain if you don't get it. Ask for the last hour if they cannot accommodate the entire 3. Ask the OS early in the week if you can get NTI hours early in exchange for the holiday shove. Give the OS the shove and when they leave cut everyone loose.

If all this fails, bang the last 3 and then ask the timekeeper the next week to convert your sick to EA.

Just because this is a very knowable thing, I decided to go find it out.

According to this page there were 14,242 controllers in FY20.
According to this page that means controllers make up 29.4% of the FAA and 24.6% of the DOT as a whole. (The DOT is composed of the FAA and pretty much no one else—nearly 84% of DOT employees are FAA employees.)

So your guess was pretty spot-on!

They get the same benefits as us minus the early TSP/Social Security. In fact they can get more retirement time if they want. Just like they get every federal holiday off which is a far better benefit than we get. I'd much rather have holidays off with my family than getting paid more. I understand a lot of controllers hate their family and love money more so it's debatable on who benefits more.

I was joking with my original post, but if you're going to give 75% of the work force free time off then you should be compensating the minority rather than sending out some half assed email about how essential we are and how much they appreciate what we do. \ to.

We get 1.7 for the first 20, they don’t. They don’t get more retirement, they just get more time
Because their job doesn’t require a medical. Big difference. We get paid double day of since planes fly 24/7. That’s what you signed up for.

If you want time off during the holidays get a desk job. Also you’d get the time off if you didn’t already have the leave in and the traffic/staffing allowed your manager to let you leave.

Some Unfortunately have to stay. That’s literally in our job description

Yeah see, I dont give a shit about how it was "back in the day". Keep the boomer logic to yourself. I browsed your profile for like 30 secs and found so many posts where you say stuff like this. This gem of yours is great:

"5 years actually. Away from My wife. We made the best of it. Because that’s what we signed up for..."

Great job being away from your wife for five years, such an inspiration! See, I like to actually see change that benefits myself and other controllers. I'm guessing you were fine with the white book right? You signed up for it so that's your problem. Oh, management fucking you over? You signed up for it, get over it.

I mean 5 years away from your wife is wack but in this case he's totally right. We get a higher % on our retirement because we retire early, we get a social security bridge because we retire early. The only thing that I think is wack is the mra+30 being out of reach without an extension. What part of his post on here don't you agree with? Do you think no controllers should work holidays? Kinda wild

I don't agree with every office job in the DoT getting extra holiday time off and controllers not getting compensated with admin leave. Just because that's how it's always been doesn't make it right. Kind of like when there is a bad snowstorm, some facilities won't give you snow leave yet all the office people don't have to come in. I was lucky and had a manager that gave time off awards to those of us that stayed or came in during snow storms. Not all managers do though and that sucks.

But someone still has to come in. What are you not understanding? This is not a how it’s always been thing. Also, We as controllers had that ability for that extra time, yes it’s inconsistent and the guidance was provided to managers, union reps should also be aware and help to advocate on your behalf on how to build the shift rotation to allow as many people to leave on that admin leave. As a facrep I used my free time to help with that. The nature of our job just doesn’t allow everyone to leave, it’s impossible. It’ll never happen unless you close the facility.

And the snow leave is a stupid example. everyones area near the facility does it different. Some states handle snow better than others while Dallas can’t handle 2 inches, Vermont people would say I could get to work, so consistency is also impossible. Some people live 1+ away, just cuz you choose to live that far does that mean someone who lives 10 mins away should be responsible to show up just cuz you live so far and are requesting Snow leave, again prove it and your fac rep and managers will approve it somehow or tell you to go screw. You were also compensated for your snow leave!!!! If it was so bad how did you get in?

So they can easily give 3 hours of credit to anyone that didn’t get to leave. It’s not that hard

Yeah I think giving people credit hours instead would be nice.

For a normal holiday the office types get to stay home and have a shorter workweek. We have to go to work. In exchange, we get paid extra for the holiday.
In this case the office types get to go home early. We have to stay at work. In exchange, we should get paid extra or be given time off to use later.

Dude doesn't understand such a simple concept. If the rest of the DoT gets it then we should get it too. I understand facilities have to be staffed so give us admin leave/time off award to use later. It's not rocket science.
