As a OJTI will you volunteer to train if training returns?

I’ll fight it tooth and nail, and if I do concede I’ll demand every member on the position wear a mask or no deal.

exactly. THIS. how can you be mandated to OJTI someone with no PPE, IN a state where you cant even "legally" (allbeit fake unconstitutional edicts from tyrants) take a walk down the road without a mask? It aint happening. Some of the mods here like to post their management info and act like it will, but it wont.

Hazard pay for working-training is a job duty, if we are returning to 'normal' functions then that's a normal part of the job.

If we are returning to normal, then there wouldnt be a certain % of the workforce at home indefinitely. And they wouldnt be talking about dental masks. Or giving excused days. Or closing facilities for deep cleanings.

We arent returning to normal.

I agree I shoulda stressed the IFFFF

I've never seen a radar room in a Tracon or a center where a trainer couldn't sit at an empty scope adjacent to the trainee and not be able to be plugged in and able to overkey. Maybe not everywhere is the same but that is an overhyped worry.

For me the bigger issue is training and certifying people on low traffic levels. By no means the trainee's fault since nobody knows if or when the normal traffic ever comes back. There's no easy answer and you have to progress people's careers at some point.
Have you considered that low traffic levels is the new normal? Airlines are taking as many voluntary early retirements as possible, asking people to take voluntary leave, and retiring aircraft right now. Unless there is an additional bailout from the federal government, furloughs are coming for the Major airlines at the end of September. Everyone has this pipe dream of traffic returning to 2019 levels next year, but I personally don’t see that happening. TSA passenger screenings have plateaued at around 27% of last years numbers and it’s certainly not the V-Shaped recovery economists have been forecasting. Personally, I think not training due to “Low” traffic counts is nonsensical.

NATCA email hot off the presses. They are fighting for airline employees to get more money. Nothing about training!!!!

Paul must still* want that seat on "the corporation" !

Damn they pack a lot of erroneous non ATC related bullshit into those emails. They want Congress to keep paying all aviation professionals (tens of thousands who work for private companies) in perpetuity. Gorbachev would love that email ! Reagan not so much.

If AAL, DAL, UAL, SWA etc. Employees cant be furloughed, no one can!

Totally fucked? Cmon man. It sucks what’s happening but that’s a bit of a stretch.
It’s more and more money down the drain every day this drags on. Not to mention how it’s going to effect a person’s actual training going from working on certs to having done absolutely nothing for 4+ months.

Are you against how N90 has used thousands of trainees as sub human political pawns for decades? (At times literally refusing to certify anyone, at others only for giant sums of money, etc) Or just more recent Covid trainees as second class citizens.

Okay yeah that sucks. And if we were coming back to 100% traffic I might agree with that second part but traffic is half what it normally is so you’ll have plenty of time to spool up as it gets busier. My management has also hinted that they’ll be giving people the option to start over on positions that they were in the middle of training on. So hopefully that can help people get a chance to completely pick it back up.

Yeah that would be the best case scenario! Now we just gotta get the ball rolling! Let’s train!

I agree, Gotta train and qualify on the traffic we got, not the worst day scenario. If that was the case no one would be qualified after 9/11 through today by those standards.
