4-10's and 5-8's

Hey guys, I write the schedule at our facility and we have always been on 5-8's. Had some controllers asking if we could get a few people on 4-10's and i was hoping someone might be able to share an example of their facilities BWS so I can see how it works at other places, just to give me some ideas.

We had one shift a couple years ago that was 4 10s. The person who worked it said they wouldn’t bid it again. It ended up being 6 10s more often than not. If staffing was adequate, I could see it working well, but we are thin.

It'd be easier if you had cpc #s to give and your staffing requirements for your day. I worked at a facility that had 11 cpc requirement for 100% and 6 cpcs for each day. There was usually 4 to 5 guaranteed 4 10 lines with it rotating through the week for RDOs. Facility hours was 645 to 915 and the 4 shifts the 4-10s could work was 1115-915, 10-8, 8-6, and 645 to 445. Usually had someone "paired" with the 4 10s who would essentially shadow their shift and double the closers and openers incase of a bang out. Mainly had to convince management that sick leave wouldn't potentially result in OT. I can see if I can get the MOUs the facility had if you want to look them over.

We have a mix of 4-10s and 5-8s at our facility. Not gonna lie, it blows.

The 8s work night night day mid mid RDO RDO
The 10s are night night RDO day day RDO RDO

We prioritized weekend RDOs as usual but are barebones every weekend. Someone will typically sick out since it’s the only leave type available then.

All the 10s love their schedules because they never work mids, have no quick turns, get 3 days off, and only really work 1hr extra per day with how the rotations go.

All the 8s are miserable and hate life. Backbone of the facility schedule building, every day is a quick turn, have next to zero spot leave potential, and are the only ones who can truly fill in for mid-shift leave/sick hits. Often times pulling 3 or more mids a week plus possible overtime on weekends.

Granted there has to be a better way than how it’s run here, and I’m actively working on new schedule ideas since there is finally enough facility angst/issues to out-vote seniority.

If you love OT, you’ll make a killing in OT. The ones at my facility have 50 percent more OT than everyone else

8 CPC’s minimum each day (this is negotiated based on a 5-8 schedule though). Essentially just need 4 controllers in the doors at all times. Hours 5:20am-10:35pm. Basic schedule is 2 at 520, 2 at 7, 2 at 1, and 2 at 2:35.
Makes sense what you wrote. I would definitely look over an MOU if you have it.

We have permanent 10s, alternating 5/8 and 4/10, and 5/8 shifts.

How many facility CPCs do you have to work with?

When someone is on a 4 10’s schedule and gets called in for OT, do they work 8hrs if that’s the shift they cover or 10 to match their normal day? Anyone know and where I can find it if it’s the latter?

8 hours. It's in the contract.
