Terminal Class pass rate

Pretty sure the last class failed all but 1...

I passed the terminal class this year. Don't focus on pass rates. Every class is different, every individual is different. The biggest thing that harms people the most is NERVES. They told us that and I didn't believe them at first but it is honestly true. The instructors prepare you well enough to pass the PAs. Just go in there with a fresh mind and just do your thing. You will be fine if you asks questions and study. Don't party. For the 12 weeks you are there just focus.

Hey guys,

I was part of the class that graduated last week 07/07/2017. I did not pass unfortunately. I just wanted to contribute back now that I have some time.

We started with 18 in basics. We ended with 17 the start of initial tower. 1 dropped around 2 weeks before PA's for reasons unknown. 16 of us took the PA's. 9 Passed.

Here is my experience for what its worth. I had a local and ground run the first day. My local was a 73 but corrected to a 78 because they added the scores incorrectly. My ground was a 100. We had July 4th off on a Tuesday. We then continued our PA's on Wednesday which I had a local run right before lunch. I obviously did not do well this local run and ended up with a 14 which mathematically ruled me out.

If your wondering why one day I had a 78 and the other a 14 on my runs, it is because I did not do my best plain and simple. Some evaluators evaluate differently than others. The runs seem to be all the same difficulty. I had a chunk taken for calling traffic "a little bit too late" according to my evaluator so that was 16 points. According to my evaluator my traffic was good but apparently not good enough.

Two who did not make it were CTI grads. the rest were veterans non-controller experience. I do believe that a majority of those who did not pass are more than capable to do the job and do it right. That is just one man's opinion. We had a great class with little to no distractions. That helps out a lot.

Get your phraseology right and keep your transmissions to a minimum because the sims back up in transmissions and that can hurt you in your PA's.

Do not get me wrong. I am not blaming anyone except myself. One thing we can all agree on is the system can be operated more effective and efficiently. Again, in the end, it is all on you no matter what.

I hope this helps out future classes to succeed.

Man that had to be a major kick in the gut doing so well the first day, probably feeling pretty good about your odds and then on the final run of the final day it all just imploding. I'm waiting to start here and that's about my worst nightmare incarnate, definitely lost some sleep over it. Do you have any plans for work or what's next?

Sorry to hear that buddy, thanks for all the info.

I have my A&P so applying for the airlines. I was also in different positions in FAA since 2013 so applying to get back in. I also applied for this other ATC bid that says if you failed before you may not get selected. But It is still worth the shot.

For any "washouts" interested. The new bid specifically states in the 4th bullet point under duties:

"Prior failure of FAA Academy training or prior declination of permanent facility placement offer after completing Academy training may constitute a basis for non-selection and/or veterans' preference pass over".
Air Traffic Control Specialist - Trainee

Also, in the internal SOP for the Selection of Academy Trainees it states...

3.2: Within 2 business days of accepting the referral list, ATO Management Services, Technical Requirements and Forecasting, Air Traffic Team (AJG-R41) will review the list to determine if there are candidates that have previously been selected, and were unsuccessful in required training at the FAAA Academy or a field facility. These candidates will be removed from further consideration for employment.

Typical government hypocrisy. Lol. It doesn't hurt to try. But don't get your hopes up.

Just to give everyone wondering an update, we passed 12/17 today.

That's pretty good. Hopefully it was just an unusually bad stretch of classes before that.

I looked and looked for a reason but could never pinpoint anything. I could easily see how bad classmate dynamics and shitty study groups could tank a few in a row, though.

Congratulations! Heard there may have been a couple surprises on people that didn't make it though.
I was looking at your facility list earlier, where are you going you think?
What do you think about going in Monday just for placement day? Better to have a free weekend, or would people rather just have picked facilities today and then used the weekend for moving?

Classmate dynamics and study groups are a poor excuse for bad individual performance.

There were definitely some surprises on the fails, we were actually expecting to pass all if not 16 of us. We were a tight group and studied a lot during basics and early Terminal, not really any surprises on the passing side. I unfortunately had a bad run on my last local but enough to pass so I'm either going Midland or Grant County. It's definitely doable, it's definitely nerves though, I know, broken record, but it really is, the problems are for the most part doable.
I'd take Midland. Moses Lake/Grant County has dreadful staffing numbers....you'd be stuck there longer than at Midland. I see no reason to take MWH unless you love Washington or hate West Texas.

Yeah definitely, I had a nerve issue on my last run, it was the very last run of our PAs, everyone knew whether they had passed, a buddy had just failed right before my run and it was a bit depressing. It wasn't a terrible run but it wasn't good. Ready to leave this place for sure though.
Now that you're done with Academy, stick around on the site and don't disappear!

Life is not about to get any easier. Training sucks, straight up.

Side note I am always entertained by people that get bummed or distracted by people who are affected by classmates failing. I think I could only name one person that was in my Academy class and I certainly wasn't friends with any of them. But perhaps I am just anti social.

I second Midland. MWH is terrible, even if they are changing the culture it's going to be years before it would be worth working at. It's a very long training program and they have very little interest in helping you finish it.

When I went through tower academy, we didn't have anyone fail in the PV days. I was friends with most of them, still friends and stay up to date with about half of them.
