Pushed to the brink? Another NYT article rehashes all the problems that haven't changed since before Reagan and PATCO

Nothing attracts quality applicants like making 30k a year to move to OKC for a 50% washout rate to move across the country again making 40k pick up a training delay due to woefully understaffed training departments. Praying politicians don’t use you as political pawn and shutdown the government while your working 2 jobs to pay for your commitments to this job and have people say you’re overpaid.

OKC trainees/instructors should get paid more
SAIC facility trainers should get paid more
All 2152 professionals should be paid more.

Money does fix staffing and it’s asinine to think it wouldn’t and to not try because you want a guarantee so let’s continue with the status quo is why we’ve made 0 progress on staffing.

OKC itself is short staffed. How does the FAA plan to even fix that problem? They can't pump more new hires through OKC without the instructors and RPO's to run the classes. How do you entice more folks from outside the Midwest to move to OKC (of all places) to become instructors after they retire?
One of the biggest changes, again to reiterate no one gives a shit how you were hired, is to send CTI direct to facilities. There is a plan in the works to do this to free up academy slots for OTS hires.

That's the funniest/saddest part of the entire problem and for whatever reason extremely overlooked. How can the FAA fix low controller staffing when their academy that initially trains new controllers is under staffed itself. The truth is the FAA doesn't really care. The academy among other things is a perfect example of how the FAA doesn't care. Yet they will pretend to care to the media because they have to.

Sending CTIs direct to facilities is going to end of being a knee jerk agency reaction that isn't going to help shit in the short term or long term. CTIs need to go to OKC and be screened like OTS hires.

If they implemented CTI schools correctly and told them exactly what was to be studied and had a curriculum from the faa they could essentially all be “academies” that are paid for. The faa just doesn’t have the balls to step in and do that lol

I would say most of the 50k applicants don't know they can be sent to a level 4 tower in bum fuck egypt while other people from the same bid get to go to a level 12 with the same qualifications.
Fact check
Readers wanted to add context that the faa does in fact have towers in bumfuck Egypt

And imagine paying 100k to go to the academy out of your own pocket with a chance of failing (a lot less likely) from a college but still potentially there

Train people locally so you can learn on your actual airspace and you can’t tap into retired controllers all over the country not just ones willing to move.
Actual controllers have to wait months after certifying on a position before they can go back to class and lab and now you want to add in more new hires to the local lab to learn from the ground up? No thanks

No I want to redo the whole system where all the SAIC money is spread around and then I want to run the local labs 2 shifts a day instead of 1. Plus the initial class would just be an expanded version of the current initial class so it wouldn’t be much longer. You’d train up then run the normal d side sims anyone would run.
