New time off between shifts mandate. Big change

Management will do anything to avoid a staffing trigger. And won’t lower the rate until it is completely unavoidable. It looks bad on them so they don’t look like good little sups. The only thing that’s gonna happen off this if it hurts staffing is controllers will get fucked with longer time on position, and shorter breaks.

Ah yeah. I have a supe that loves to say “only 30 minute break you’re guaranteed per the CBA is your meal break”

They are just mad cause they have to provide oversight at least 5 hours per day and miss having any real breaks.

Tater Toad for natca prez!

I know this is going to be the rhetoric, that the FAA did this on their own, which is somewhat true. This definitely isn’t a NATCA ‘win’. The only ‘win’ is forcing the FAA to not enact it in 30 days with no controller input.

However, the constant legislative work by natca, exposing the OT/Fatigue in senate hearings from natca, mixed with the media and political pressure forced the FAAs hand in enacting new “fatigue rules”. If there wasn’t any exterior pressure being applied to the FAA they would never in a million years change their fatigue policy or staffing model.
I'd get assassinated

i see this as a good thing.

How do you feel about it? I think it would be a good thing if we had some more staffing
Staffing fixes all things

Once people swallow the best way to do this, it will be a good thing. Hopefully reps figure it out.

The day-mid sucks. We are just use to abusing ourselves. The smart people that care about their health avoid it like the plague

It doesn’t do anything different for 24 hour faculties. We will likely be on straight shifts.
There will always be some time of rotation. Just won’t be a rotation into a mid every week.

Some could be straights shifts

It’s not one size fits all. Some places have crews of 2 people, others have crews of 7 people.

It shortens our weekends. As someone who works at a facility that barely works overtime all this MOU does is screw up my preferred schedule and give me a shorter weekend than I have now. Extra time off between shifts doesn't appeal to me.

But I know a vast majority of my coworkers nationwide are in very different situations and appreciate this.

2025 is gonna be very interesting for the lower level 24/7 facilities that are hurting for staffing. Facilities where everyone is on a double quick turn with a mid. Yes everyone has to have a mid. Facilities that bid 13-15 lines every year.

So if we can't do straight shifts (because not enough staffing) where we rotate every week or every other week, the new rules will handcuff us even more. These new rules will result in more fatigue IF we don't get away from the rattler.

My own experience, when your young, the rattler isn't so hard. But as you get older it gets harder and harder to get decent sleep. If I work 2 mids I'm f*cked for 2.5-3 days and that's if I have no OT. I just cannot get more than 2.5 hours of sleep before a mid, or even after a mid. I'm so tired I can't even enjoy being present at my kids activities. To me, the rattler is easily the most depressing aspect of this job.

If you do end up having to do straight shifts you should consider alternating between a week of nights and a week of days. I know it’s not as long as the rattler weekends but you do get an extended weekend twice a month when you transition from days to nights. You would also need to have dedicated permanent mid people to pull it off

In all seriousness what if you just... didn't have the mid? What's worse for the customers, delays for staffing during the day or getting everyone on the ground and then closing the tower overnight?

That's a much bigger discussion than this MOU of course, and apparently it takes quite a lot of effort to reduce operating hours. But it's something to think about.

Not an option, there is a very legitimate reason why were 24/7.
