May (Q2) 2021

It is true that the FAA doomed the system when they went to this you are not placed until after finals, you can be put anyplace in the country, facility fantasy draft bull shit.

It gets almost nobody anywhere where they want to go, and pushes 70% or more to try to move starting the day after they get certified. Also encourages people to backstab their peers to try to leap them in NCEPT or scam hardships.

Back when you could select a few states nowhere near this many people were trying to transfer and move, a fraction of how many are now. No way this could ever be quantified though as I’m sure the FAA never thought of it would have been competent enough to keep records of things like that.

Preference would be cool but I'd venture to say that a good portion of people are fine with getting sent wherever simply because this is the job they want and they just want a foot in the door. Plus even if someone has a dad at a facility it's sorta trashy that they get automatically sent there for that reason.

We literally did a fantasy draft the night after finals in my class. We finished the placement meeting in like 20 minutes since everyone knew where they were going.

That's some serious greatest job in the world thinking right there.

Like okay great, people want the job, and in theory say they are willing to work anywhere. Then they figure out "anywhere" also includes some toxic ass little facility full of dudes who think they are the gem of the NAS and you have to be a special snowflake to work there way out in bumfuck (cedar rapids-if you can work here you can work anywhere!), the shine wears off, reality kicks in and suddenly they aren't anymore.

Top it all off with now they can't leave because no one is good enough to certify at gem o the NAS bumfuck tracon (takes a long time to be THIS good sonny), and even when they do NCEPT will never let them.

Ya there's definitely better ways to get this done.

side note....yes nepotism is dumb, and anyone who tells thier children this is a great job and encourages them to get into it is committing child abuse, change my mind.

There are better ways to get this done IF and that’s a big if, you don’t care about some facilities closing because no one will ever go there. You’d have to implement so many facility specific incentives or hiring pools or whatever, the agency can barely handle 1, they would screw that up to.

it’s not child abuse when you probably can’t name me one job with zero entrance experience requirements and this much upside where you’ll most likely end up a millionaire just by showing u, and better Heath care than most other jobs that also require zero entrance requirements.

Yeah if you bomb out of NCT then SMF and RNO should be off limits! Hohohoho!
ACK it is or back to the hell of the corporate world. Though to be fair RNO is at the bottom of training success rates for 5s so I imagine that'd be on the NEST list.

How about if you go to your first facility for 6 yrs you actually get priority instead of being passed by someone who just certifies. That seems like a great first start to getting NCEPT going in the right direction ??‍♂️

You're taking what I'm saying wrong. I'm not a person that thinks this is the greatest job in the world by far nor do I agree with the bulk of what NATCA and the FAA are doing. I'm simply saying there are a contingent of OTS applicants that will take this job regardless of the location because it's what they've wanted to do and they will figure out the rest later. At the same time 5+ years ago the instructors at the academy were peddling the "Go to a low level up/down and get your radar ticket." That alone in itself probably doomed a good portion of people to black hole facilities.

I do think most of these low level facilities need their training programs evaluated. At my first facility a sup told me you won't get rated on local until you work all four seasons. What kind of metric is that. It was dead during the winter yet management is forcing people to waste hours talking to snow plows. That's the kind of stuff that gives a level 5 a 2 year training time.

True that, carry on then haha

The FAA as a whole needs some more structure to training, too much leeway given to local management. The NTI was a blessing in all honesty.

We had one that couldn’t decide till it was pick time and he finished first lmao

What if I told you people already lived in those towns no one wants to move to. Make local facilities and regions interview people. Hiring for a job in a specific location is done at literally every other job on earth

What if I told you that those people would hear about the 150k you make at a level 12 and try to move up for money or to live in a big city! But I agree with local bids only for hard to staff facilities with the option for academy grads to request them as well.

Or they could just have the same thing as Hawaii etc where if you’re from the area you can request it when you arrive at the academy. That would get you numbers very fast about how many would prefer to stay in their home towns.

I mean of course many people are gonna want to move up at some point, but having someone who isn't chuffed about being stuck halfway across the country from somewhere they actually don't mind being in the meantime makes for a happier employee, and a happy employee is much less likely to start playing the ncept lottery immediately just taking anything they can to get out (thus making for another move down the road) or hardship vs biding thier time to make that next career move to somewhere they actually want to be.

What if I told you that wouldn’t matter? The agency does not want to spend money advertising in every damn city and state because they currently have 30k applications every bid full of people who say they are willing to go anywhere then bitch and complain when they don’t know what that means

I think people here are suggesting the agency change. How do you think all thr other agencies fill positions.
